Cron schedule in a time zone

A job at 02:30 every night does not run on the spring-forward night in most zones — or runs twice in autumn at 01:30. See what happens before it does.

Dialect: 5-field Unix cron (Vixie/cronie field rules: names, ranges, steps, lists; day-of-month OR day-of-week when both are set). Seconds fields, Quartz L/W/# and @reboot are rejected. Real schedulers differ around DST (cronie, systemd timers, Kubernetes CronJob and cloud schedulers each have their own rules), so this is a preview under the policy you pick, not a guarantee.

What this preview assumes

The expression is read as five fields — minute, hour, day of month, month, day of week — with names, ranges, lists and steps. When both day fields are restricted, a day matches if either does, as in Vixie cron and cronie. Six- and seven-field Quartz or Spring expressions are rejected instead of being guessed.

DST behaviour varies between schedulers: cronie runs jobs from a skipped hour after the jump for fixed-time jobs, systemd timers and Kubernetes CronJobs have their own logic, and many cloud schedulers only offer UTC. Choose the policy that matches yours; the preview is not a promise about any scheduler.

Questions

How do I avoid DST problems in cron?

Run the scheduler in UTC, or avoid scheduling jobs between 01:00 and 03:00 local time in zones with DST.

Can I export the runs?

Yes, as a JSON list of expected UTC instants with the expression, zone, policy and dialect, for use as test vectors.
