Differences move

London and New York are usually five hours apart, but for about three weeks in March and one week around the start of November they are four hours apart, because the US and the UK change clocks on different dates. Sydney and London range between 9 and 11 hours apart because the two hemispheres move in opposite directions.

The table samples the 15th of each month and highlights months where the difference is not the same as on your chosen date. The list below it gives the exact dates either zone changes.

Questions

Why is India 5:30 and Nepal 5:45 ahead of UTC?

Several countries use half-hour or quarter-hour offsets. The calculator works in exact minutes and never rounds to whole hours.

Is “X hours ahead” the same as converting a time?

Only on dates where neither zone changes. To convert a specific appointment use the converter, which handles the exact date.
